Left activists stage protest over death of minor girl in Bengal’s Bankura, break police barricade

Tensions erupted in the Raipur area of Bankura district in West Bengal after supporters of students, youths and women of the left organisations protested at the local police station demanding proper investigation into the recent unnatural death of a girl in Raipur area of Bankura. On Sunday, the protesters forcibly tried to break the police barricade and enter the police station, which led to a scuffle between them.

 

A 16-year-old teenage girl from Matgoda village was found dead mysteriously on April 11. She did not return home on the night of April 10, she apparently went to her aunt’s house. The next day, her body was found in an area called Jadavnagar, about two and a half kilometers away from the village. Police filed a case of unnatural death and conducted an autopsy. Thereafter, Raipur police arrested a young man on suspicion of involvement in the teenager's death.

 

Left organisations called for a protest at the local Raipur police station demanding a proper investigation into the incident and appropriate punishment for the culprits.

Accompanied by the mother of the deceased teenager, students, youth and women activists of the left organisations marched from CPI(M) party office to the Raipur police station. In a procession led by Deblina Hembrum, a former minister of the state and party central committee member. The protesters broke the barricade and tried to enter the police station. A huge police force brought the situation under control. The leadership has threatened to launch a larger movement if the perpetrators are not punished after a speedy investigation.
